定义

尺度是指衡量事物性质、特征、度量的标准、规范。中国古代，尺度有两义。一为计量度量的定制，二为标准。两义均含有事物性质、特征和衡量事物美的标准的内涵。西方美学史上最早提出“尺度”并将其视作衡量美的标准、规范的是古希腊的柏拉图。指出一切良好的是美的，而美就是没有失去尺度的。亚里士多德在《诗学》中将各部分的安排、体积的大小，零散因素的结合所形成的整一性、清晰度等视为美的尺度，认为这种尺度是一种客观的法则。古罗马奥古斯丁认为最合乎尺度的美是神创造的，神的美是最高的衡量一切美的尺度。法国笛卡尔则以二元论解释尺度，一方面他把事物各部分恰到好处的协调和适中视为美的客观尺度，另一方面又认为美是主观判断和对象之间的一种关系，由于人们的主观不同，所以美和愉快没有绝对的尺度。马克思在《1844年经济学哲学手稿》中沿用了“尺度”的概念，指出“动物只是按照它所属的那个种的尺度和需要来建造，而人却懂得按照任何一个钟的尺度来进行生产，并且懂得怎样处处都把内在的尺度运用到对象上去；因此，人也按照美的规律来建造”（马克思，恩格斯，1979：97）。原意是指人的劳动与动物劳动的根本区别，并通过尺度来说明美的规律。他将尺度分为三种。第一种为“种的尺度”，指某类物种自身所固有的单一尺度。第二种为“任何一个钟的尺度”，指人在长期生产实践、审美实践和美的创造中所认识、遵循的大千世界各种客观事物的尺度、标准和规律。第三种为“内在的尺度”，指人自身的尺度，是人在实践中对任何一个种的尺度、客观事物规律性和对人自身规律性的把握的基础上所形成的尺度（朱立元，2014：24）。
