定义

技术革命指在技术自身发展过程中带有根本性的变革。技术革命不同于科学革命，也不同于工业革命，技术革命可能带来的是科学革命，也可能带来的是产业或者是工业革命，比如，20世纪的生物技术带来了分子生物学、基因组学的科学革命，而21世纪的合成生物学引发的技术革命却可能带来生物产业革命。技术革命首先是行业中的所用工具在革命前后发生大的改变，这表现在新机器或新工具的发明或者从其它行业引进它们，继而行业中的技术知识要求发生大的转变，技术革命前的技术专家，在技术革命后其知识结构使之不再能胜任专家的职责。技术革命使行业中的人员的知识结构普遍地发生变化，相应地，行业中的操作技能也发生转变，并且技术革命使行业产生新的行业英雄。行业中的人能亲身感受到技术革命的冲击，并作出不同的反应，旧技术知识的拥有者面对新的技术而不能适应，新技术知识的拥有者则竭力推崇新技术，新知识培养和造就的新一代技术者推动着新技术的发展。技术革命使行业发生急剧转变或行业革命，然而，并非行业革命都能说是技术革命造成的，因为社会政策的改变，以及行业中管理方式的改变同样能使行业迅猛发展，我国改革开放政策实施后，百业兴旺，这是由政策的改变或革命而非技术革命造成的（潘天群，2001：5）。
