定义

民族精神，一般说来，是指民族性格中的正面优点部分，或民族道德与民族文化中的精华部分。基本内涵有两个层面，一是相对于民族和民族社会的物质实质存在而言，指称民族的精神存在。民族的精神存在包括它现存的精神面貌，主要表现在人类心理的不同层面及其积淀之上。二是民族精神的狭义使用，特指以既定民族和民族社会为背景的民族性格和民族文化中正面和富于肯定性价值的部分，它是对民族文化之优秀遗产的心理继承，是民族和民族社会生存发展的精神支柱，并具体地内涵在民族社会与文化历史的发展过程之中。每一个民族都有自己的民族精神，这种民族精神具有某种核心价值，成为某种向心力的源泉（徐万邦等，1995：319）。中华民族具有悠久的历史和灿烂的文化，我国各族人民在长期的斗争中培育和熔炼了自己优秀的民族精神。毛泽东对这种民族精神作了高度的概括。毛泽东指出：“中华民族不但以刻苦耐劳著称于世，同时又是酷爱自由、富于革命传统的民族。……中华民族又是一个有光荣的革命传统和优秀的历史遗产的民族”（毛泽东，1991：623）。同时还指出：“我们中华民族有同自己的敌人血战到底的气概，有在自力更生基础上光复旧物的决心，有自立于世界民族之林的能力”（毛泽东，1991：161）。江泽民指出，在五千多年历史发展中，中华民族形成了以爱国主义为核心的团结统一、爱好和平、勤劳勇敢、自强不息的伟大民族精神。面对世界范围各种思想文化的相互激荡，必须把弘扬和培养民族精神作为文化建设极其重要的任务，纳入国民教育全过程，纳入精神文明建设全过程，使全体人民始终保持昂扬向上的精神状态。
