“当代资本主义”本身是一个不确定的概念，这至少体现在两个方面：一是“当代”的所指不明确或不一致。概括地说，目前人们是在两种不同意义上使用“当代资本主义”一词的，第一种是广义地用以表示二战后的资本主义，这种意义上的当代资本主义其实是与19世纪的古典资本主义相对的。两次世界大战的变化被视为后者向前者转变的一种过渡。这种界定实际上是笼统地把战后以来的资本主义视为一个发展阶段。但许多学者，尤其是西方学者，并不认同这一点。他们强调了20世纪70年代以来的资本主义新变化。由此，人们区分了战后资本主义“黄金时代”和此后的时代。后者也就是人们所用的第二种意义上的“当代”，专指20世纪70年代以来的资本主义。这一时期的资本主义在经济、政治和社会生活方面都表现出了与此前资本主义“黄金时代”不同的特征。人们对其特征也有不同的表述，如最常用的“全球化时代的资本主义”。今天，两种意义上的“当代资本主义”在国内学界的讨论中都不时可见。不过，进入新世纪后，尤其是全球金融危机爆发后，人们一度认为特征明显的新资本主义变得更加混沌了，它促使人们把更多的关注由过去转向了未来，即更多地思考21世纪资本主义的发展趋向（林德山，2015：10）。
