二元世界是指，（1）指在同一空间里存在着两个平行的世界。（2）指世界观、信奉世界观点的对立与不同。例如，“当代马克思主义中国化是在一个日趋复杂和多元的理论生态环境下进行的。其最突出的特征就是，在整个改革开放进程中始终存在两种最为流行和受众最广的话语系统：一是由马克思主义主导的政治学话语；一是西方经济学占强势地位的经济学话语。二者的相互竞争和在价值观上的对立带来的一个理论后果就是经济世界与价值世界的偏离。走出这种二元世界的樊篱，是当代马克思主义中国化所面临的一项重大使命”（张雪魁，2008：12）。这句话中对二元世界的理解便是指一种对立的观点、认识或者选择，非此即彼。（3）一种二元对立的文艺批评观点。组成二元对立的双方在理论上是相反的对立的。例如，维多利亚时期是典型的男性与女性二元对立的社会，女性没有真正的自由，活动范围只限于家庭内部。凯特×肖邦写的《觉醒》描写了维多利亚时期女性的行为方式和生存状况，将那种活动范围在家庭内部的女人称为“屋子里的天使”，而涉及到男生涉足的事时，便称为“阁楼上的疯女人”。埃德娜作为小说中的女主人公和当时其他的女性截然不同，是具有反叛个性的女性。她在经过自我和世俗要求的强烈思想斗争之后，选择了一种实现自我和追求人生价值的人生道路。她不与阿黛尔等“天使般的女人”为伍，追随瑞之小姐这样的“疯女人”的脚步，摒弃世俗的观念，打破了“天使疯女人”的二元对立。
