定义

伦理学范畴。指个人所意识到的对他人、集体和社会应尽的道德责任。旧译“本务”。源于拉丁文debere，意谓“负有”、“应尽”。中国伦理思想史上与此相近的范畴为“义”，指言行符合于一定的准则。儒家强调人们的行为应当符合“义”，亦即符合封建社会“三纲”、“五常”的义务。在欧洲，古希腊哲学家德谟克里特最早把义务范畴纳入伦理学，并把义务和行为的内在动机联系起来。柏拉图则提出，每一个不同等级的人，应该根据上天所赋予的智慧和德性而做他们应当做的事。这一观点后为中世纪神学家所利用，用以巩固教会地位和维护封建等级制度。在近代，德国哲学家康德把义务作为伦理学的中心范畴，认为义务就是从先天的“善良意志”出发的“绝对命令”，提出“为义务而义务”的形式主义公式：“行为要有道德价值，一定要是为义务而实行的。”（《道德形而上学探本》）一些唯物主义哲学家则反对把义务说成是由上帝意志或理性本身规定的，但又往往撇开义务的社会性质，而以人的自然本性和自然需要来解释义务。费尔巴哈认为，义务表现着他人对幸福的追求，又是为了将来的幸福而抑制自己的现实欲求的诫条，并认为“义务是自我克制，而自我克制无非是使我们服从别人的利己主义”（《幸福论》）。在现代，义务论直觉主义把“义务”看做是伦理学中的最主要概念，并把“义务”与“善”分割开来，使义务成为没有具体社会内容的形式上的要求。马克思主义认为义务源于人们的社会关系，个人处在一定的社会关系中，不管是否意识到，客观上必然要对他人、对社会负有一定的使命和职责，承担一定的义务。人们对义务的认识和体验，在内心形成一定的义务观和义务感，就转变为践履一定义务的道德行为。由于社会关系的复杂性，决定了义务的多样性。大致可分为对他人和对社会两大类：前者是对自己的家庭、亲属、同事、朋友等应尽的责任，后者是对祖国、民族、集体等应尽的责任。在阶级社会中，各个阶级又总是把实践本阶级的道德原则和规范视作人们应尽的义务。义务不以谋取某种相应的权利或报偿为前提，是人们基于对社会和他人利益的理解，并在内心信念的引导下自觉履行的责任（金炳华，2003：665）。
