定义

也译为“境况”、“境遇”、“情境”。处境是萨特自由观中的重要概念，一般指人在世界中所面临的境况。萨特在《存在与虚无》中对这一概念作了阐释（金炳华，冯契，2001：177）。萨特认为，所谓处境，“就是自在的偶然性与自由的共同产物，是一种模棱两可的现象，是人所面对的一切人或物，是人们创造的，因而己成为过去的周围世界。在每种具体的、特定的处境下，很难区分哪些是回到自由中去的和哪些是回到自为的原始存在中去的东西”。萨特认为，自由受处境的限制，不是说人生而在世其发展是有必然性的，相反，它是“纯粹的偶然性”。（王国华，2007：37）。萨特把处境的显示方式分为的五种，即我处的地点、我的过去、我的周围、我的邻人、我的死亡（王国华，2007：38）。由处境到自由有两条规定：“其一，自由表现在处境中，人的自由必须有一定的背景。其二，选择在任何处境中皆能成立，即使是作为自由的限制和障碍之物也不能扼杀自由”。萨特“处境中的自由”的观点是其向晚期思想过渡的一个契机（金炳华，冯契，2001：177）。
