定义

自由意志体现了人类借助于对事物的认识而作出决定并采取行动的能力。从伦理道德层面来看，自由意志作为一个伦理学范畴体现了人在行动时对善与恶、道德或不道德的一种选择自由。古希腊著名哲学家德谟克里特认为，德行可教可学，并提出了意志可决定自己道德行为的思想。古希腊另一位著名哲学家亚里士多德也曾明确指出，由于人的意志有能力自由选择和决定自己的行为，因而人必须对自己的行为负道德责任。到了中世纪，一些神学家宣扬人的德性是由上帝赋予的，美德是天启。但一些经院哲学家曾认为既然一切都是由上帝安排，那么人没有意志自由。据此，才产生了人的行为有没有意志自由的问题。在近代，德国哲学家康德曾提出先天的善良意志的观点，认为意志自由、灵魂不死和上帝存在是实践理性的公设，明确提出人的道德意志是独立的、绝对自由的。黑格尔把人的道德伦理看作是自由意志的体现，认为人的本质在于自由意志，自由意志体现在外，是对物的占有的权利，体现在人的主观内心，就是道德，而伦理就是自由意志的具体实现。马克思主义者认为，人的意志要受到客观实际或客观实践的影响，意志的内容也从现世中形成的，因而意志是社会历史的产物并随着社会实践的发展而发展。就每个人来说，意志的能力和自身的实践活动情况、自身的主观素质即他所受的教育、文化素养等有关。此外，在私有制下，人的意志要受阶级性制约，并反映着一定阶级的利益和要求。（金炳华，2003：354）
