定义

生产方式，即物质资料的生产方式。人类社会生活所必须的物质资料的谋得方式。生产方式是社会赖以存在的基础和社会发展的决定力量（王国炎等，1993：127）。生产方式包括两个方面：生产力和生产关系。其中，生产力是生产方式的物质内容，生产关系是生产方式的社会形式（卢之超，1993：725）。在生产方式中，生产力和生产关系是对立统一的辩证关系（许征帆，1987：257）。生产力决定生产关系，生产关系反作用于生产力。生产方式发展和更替的各个历史阶段，依次表现为原始公社生产方式、奴隶占有制生产方式、封建主义生产方式、资本主义生产方式和社会主义生产方式（卢之超，1993：726）。生产方式是社会发展的决定力量，制约着整个社会生活、政治生活和精神生活过程。有什么样的生产方式，基本上就有什么样的政治法律制度，就有什么样的社会思想和社会文化，就有什么样的社会（许征帆，1987：258）。生产方式的更替不是人们可以随意改变的，它归根结底决定着社会从低级向高级的发展（卢之超，1993：726）。在马克思恩格斯的著作中，特别是在《资本论》中，生产方式是多含义的概念。它除在上述含义上使用外，还有以下含义：（1）作为介于生产力和生产关系之间并把它们联系起来的范畴，用以指劳动者和生产资料结合的方式。马克思恩格斯在《德意志意识形态》一文中提出了生产力、生产关系（交往形式）、生产方式、经济基础（市民社会）等唯物史观的基本范畴。（2）直接作为生产关系。“历史上一定的社会生产方式即商品生产的生产关系。”（马克思等，1972：93）（3）作为劳动的方式，即劳动者在劳动过程中相互结合以及运用生产资料的方式（许征帆，1987：258）。“工场手工业（与机械工场或工厂不同）是一种特殊的分工相适应的生产方式或者说是一种工业形式。”（马克思等，1979：338）
