定义

和平共处五项原则是1953年12月31日周恩来总理在中国政府代表团和印度政府代表团就中印两国在中国西藏地方的关系问题的谈判中首次提出的。其基本内容有：互相尊重领土主权、互不侵犯、互不干涉内政、平等互惠和和平共处。1954年4月29日，中印两国发表会谈公报，签署《关于中国西藏地方和印度之间的通商和交通协定》，公报和协定都明确载入以五项原则作为指导两国关系的基本原则，这国际关系史上的首创（余源培，2004，via： http://book.duxiu.com/EncyDetail.jsp?dxid=900008441137&d=4A9BCF40867D3674E730DFF092E5CE7D）。1954年6月25日至29日，周恩来总理应邀访问印度和缅甸，分别与印度总理和缅甸总理发表中印、中缅联合声明，共同倡导和平共处五项原则。中印联合声明指出：两国总理“感到在他们与亚洲以及世界其他国家的关系中也应该适用这些原则”。中缅联合声明确认，五项原则应是指导中国和缅甸之间关系的原则，并指出：“如果这些原则能为一切国家所遵守，则社会制度不同的国家的和平相处就有了保证。1955年万隆会议上，和平共处五项原则引申和发展为十项原则。邓小平曾指出，“处理国与国之间的关系，和平共处五项原则是最好的方式。其他方式，如大家庭方式，‘集团政治’方式，‘势力范围’方式，都会带来矛盾，激化国际局势。总结国际关系的实践，最具有强大生命力的就是和平共处五项原则。”和平共处五项原则是当代国际关系的公认准则，为处理国际问题提供了良好思路（朱庭光，1995：260）。
