定义

必要劳动的对称。指劳动者超过必要劳动界限所进行的劳动。在一定的条件下，劳动者除能生产满足本人及其家属生活需要的必要产品外，还能超过它的范围，提供一定量的剩余产品。生产剩余产品所耗费的劳动叫剩余劳动，从事剩余劳动的时间叫剩余劳动时间。
人们能够提供剩余劳动，是一定历史条件的产物，是社会生产力发展的必然结果。在原始社会存在的很长一段时间，由于社会生产力极其低下，人们往往需要耗用全部劳动时间，才能获得极为有限的维持生存的必要生活资料。在那时，人们的全部劳动几乎都是必要劳动，不存在什么剩余劳动。只是到了原始社会后期，由于劳动生产率有了一定的提高，人们才开始超过必要劳动界限，提供剩余劳动。
剩余劳动的出现，对社会生产发展和整个社会的进步具有决定意义。在此以前，人们只能进行原始的简单再生产，全力为温饱而劳动，没有余力从事其他活动。自从有了剩余产品以及由此形成的积累，人们便有了扩大再生产的源泉，从事政治、精神活动和发展文化、教育、科学事业的物质基础。
在历史上，出现剩余劳动的一个直接结果便是剥削和阶级的产生。因为劳动者只提供必要劳动而不提供剩余劳动，就没有剩余劳动时间去生产剩余产品供别人占有和享用，就不可能出现剥削和剥削阶级。人类历史上出现过的三种基本剥削制度，即奴隶制、封建制和资本主义制度，它们的共同点都是占有生产资料的剥削者无偿占有劳动者的剩余劳动。但是它们从劳动者身上榨取剩余劳动的方式又有所不同。
在社会主义社会，劳动者提供的剩余劳动，是为社会公共需要和社会发展，为整体利益和长远利益而进行的劳动，是社会主义扩大再生产的源泉，是文化、教育、科学事业发展的经济基础，是劳动人民物质文化生活不断提高的物质前提（许征帆，1987：1215-1216）。
