社会关系的物化是晚期马克思批判资本主义的一个重要理论。根据马克思的有关论述，社会关系的物化是指在人类社会的生产活动进入到交换价值生产的阶段，生产者由于交换而发生的社会关系不是表现为直接的社会关系，而是表现为物之间的社会关系，即人与人之间一定的社会关系是以物与物之间的关系的虚幻形式出现。在《1857—1858年经济学手稿》中，马克思从分析交换价值入手，从逻辑上对社会关系物化取代交往关系异化进行了论证，并通过对社会关系发展的三个阶段的考察分析了社会关系物化的发生过程。社会关系物化理论的提出，标志着马克思抛弃了早期的异化史观，实现了早期人本主义异化批判逻辑到社会关系物化批判逻辑的转变。在资本主义社会条件下，人与人之间的关系通过物与物之间的关系间接地表现出来。资产阶级经济学家把人们本身的生产关系归结为“物”，甚至看成是“物” 本身具有的自然属性。马克思则透过“物”的种种形式，看到了人与人之间的关系。在马克思看来，货币交换是资本主义社会中人们之间进行联系的唯一手段，货币这种物实际上是物化的交换价值，而交换价值无非是人们互相间生产活动的关系。货币交换使人把他本身的力量转化为商品，人与人之间通过商品、货币发生社会关系。因此，在资本主义社会中，社会关系物化了。这种物化的社会关系，打破了人与人之间那些传统的固定的依赖关系，促使人类挣脱了自然联系和人身依附的纽带，造成了人与人之间的全面联系。同时，物化的社会关系又表明，人们创造出来的社会关系又反过来作为一种异己的力量支配控制着人本身，人与人之间还没有实现真正的全面联系。只有当人与人之间的社会关系作为他们自己的共同的关系，处于人们自己的控制之下，人们才会揭掉社会关系的物的外衣，真正成为社会关系的主人（李淮春，1996：569）。在马克思看来，交换价值是社会关系一切矛盾的表现形式，所以对社会关系物化的分析首先是从对交换价值的分析开始的。因为“货币制度的和货币制度下的产品交换的一切矛盾，是作为交换价值的关系的发展，是产品作为交换价值或价值本身规定的发展”（马克思，恩格斯，1979：97）。社会关系的物化，使社会关系从内在于人的东西变成了一种外在于人的东西，变成了一种社会权力。对这种物化现象，马克思是持批判态度的。马克思认为社会关系的物化有自然关系上的物化和社会关系上的物化两种情况。他指出：“任何生产都是个人物化。但是，在货币（交换价值）上，个人的物化不是个人在其自然规定性上的物化，而是个人在一种社会规定（关系）上的物化。同时这种规定对个人来说又是外在的”（马克思，恩格斯，1979：176）。这就是说社会关系的物化，不是个人在生产过程中人的本质力量的体现、实现和对象化意义上的物化，而是个人在一种社会规定性上的物化社会关系的物化，使社会关系从内在于人的东西变成了一种外在于人的东西，变成了一种社会权力，人们信赖的是物而不是人自身。社会关系的物化是历史的产物，也只是在历史一定阶段上存在的现象。要消灭这种现象必须具备一定的社会条件，这个条件就是在集体中人获得自由发展。马克思的社会关系物化理论既揭示了商品经济社会生产关系、社会关系变化的一般过
