定义

经济基础是指一定社会中占统治地位的生产关系的总和，即以社会核心生产力为基础的经济结构总和。生产力决定了经济基础，社会生产力发展到什么程度，就会产生什么样的经济基础。经济基础属于历史唯物主义的基本概念，与“上层建筑”相对，是社会结构两个基本层次之一。历史唯物主义认为，一定社会的基础是该社会的经济关系的体系，即生产关系的总和，主要包括生产资料所有制、生产过程中人与人之间的关系和分配关系三个方面，其中生产资料所有制是首要的（via: http://baike.baidu.com/link?url=psIbZNt4DtP4pW829thQySReauIYZ8f2BhlKzoSm0ZV_Rzpk5D67aBPWq33iGEDxUjNnE2HTolGNpodA3iatga）。如何理解“生产关系的总和”构成社会经济基础这一观点，有学者认为在社会生产力发展过程中,生产力自身的状况并不是单纯的、单一的,因此也就有不止一种生产关系与较为复杂的社会生产力的状况相适应（胡懋仁，2006：18）。同时经济基础和上层建筑是互相联系、互相作用的。经济基础派生和决定上层建筑，上层建筑又反作用于经济基础。两者的这种相互作用关系表现为上层建筑适合经济基础发展状况的规律。经济基础是划分不同社会形态的直接的客观依据。按照经济基础的性质，通常把人类社会划分为：原始社会、奴隶社会、封建社会、资本主义社会和共产主义社会（社会主义社会是它的低级阶段）五种基本形态。
