定义

广义指人类文明发展的一个阶段。是继工业文明之后的人类文明新形态。狭义则指文明的一个方面，即相对于物质文明、精神文明、政治文明和社会文明而言，人类在处理与自然的关系时所达到的一种文明性状。是生态伦理最高价值目标。20世纪60年代以来，人们在探索环境保护和可持续发展战略的过程中逐渐明确了建设生态文明的重要性。1972年罗马俱乐部发表的《增长的极限》提出了均衡发展的概念；1987年联合国环境与发展委员会发布的《我们共同的未来》，是人类构建生态文明的纲领性文件；1992年在巴西里约热内卢召开的联合国环境与发展大会，是人类在构建生态文明过程中的一座重要里程碑。生态文明就是实现人与自然的和谐发展。它以生态平衡为核心，以代际公正为原则，反对极端的人类中心主义，协调经济发展与人口、资源、环境的关系。包括：控制人口增长，节约自然资源，防治环境污染，发展环保工业，实施循环经济，生产绿色产品，建设生态文化，培养人们以生态文明为价值取向的生活方式。人类选择生态文明，是基于对传统工业化的反思，是对人类社会发展规律认识的新的突破，反映了人类文明的发展方向。建设生态文明是贯彻落实科学发展观、构建和谐社会的必然要求，它与物质文明、政治文明、精神文明、社会文明相互促进，构成了中国特色社会主义现代文明的统一整体（朱贻庭，2002：161）。新时期大力推进生态文明建设，迫切需要综合多维度研究的成果和方法，加强研究的系统性，重构和创新理论范式和分析框架，开展实践调查和案例分析，并将“五位一体”下生态文明建设的道路选择、制度建设、评价标准等方面的研究推向深入。
