定义

查尔斯·罗伯特·达尔文（1809—1882），是英国生物学家、进化论的奠基人。曾经乘坐贝格尔号舰作了历时5年的环球航行，对动植物和地质结构等进行了大量的观察和采集，并于1859年出版了《物种起源》，又译作《物种原始》，提出了以自然选择、适者生存为基础的进化学说，不仅说明了物种是可以变的，而且对生物的适应性也做出了解释，从而沉重打击了各种唯心主义神创论、目的论和物种不变论。此后，继续撰写多部著作，系统阐述人工选择理论，并提出和论证人类的动物学起源和选择性，使进化学说更趋完备，进化论使生物学奠定在科学的基础上，对生物学和整个人类思想都产生了巨大的深远的影响（金炳华等，2001：198）。除了生物学外，他的理论对人类学、心理学、哲学的发展都有不容忽视的影响。达尔文本人认为“他一生中主要的乐趣和唯一的事业”,是他的科学著作。还有一些在旅行中直接考察得到的最重要的科学成果，如：达尔文本人所写的著名的《考察日记》和《贝格尔号地质学》、《贝格尔号的动物学》等。恩格斯将“进化论”列为19世纪自然科学的三大发现之一(其他两个是细胞学说、能量守恒转化定律)，对人类有杰出的贡献。1882年4月19日，这位伟大的科学家因病逝世，人们把他的遗体安葬在牛顿的墓旁，以表达对这位科学家的敬仰（达尔文.via：http://baike.so.com/doc/2801473-2956860.html）。
