一定历史时代社会生活各领域所反映出的该时代客观本质及其发展趋势的精神追求。反映一定历史时代的本质特征和发展趋势的社会思想特质及其风貌。对时代发展和整个社会生活具有巨大的能动作用。时代精神不是抽象的，而是具体的、历史的。每个时代都有自己的时代精神，这使得不同时代各具特色。时代精神集中体现于社会意识中那些代表时代发展潮流、标志时代的精神文明水平、对社会生产和生活方式产生积极的、显著的影响的思想和观念中（刘建明，1993：533）。时代的客观潮流是第一性的，反映该潮流的思想和观念是第二性的、近似的，在阶级社会中，这种反映还具有阶级性（金炳华，2001：1329）。通常，在一定历史时代中，处于该时代的中心，决定该时代的主要特征和发展方向的阶级的思想，是该时代之时代精神的代表。比如在改革开放和上主义现代化建设时期，就形成了以改革开放为核心的时代精神（吴树青等，2014：164）。时代精神集中体现社会意识中那些代表时代发展潮流，标志时代特征的精神水平，对社会生产和生活方式产生积极的、显著的影响。在一定历史时代中，处于该时代的中心，决定该时代主要特征和发展方向。
