即期汇率是交易双方达成外汇买卖协议后，在两个工作日以内办理交割的汇率，是其他外汇交易的基础。这一汇率一般就是现时外汇市场的汇率水平。即期汇率是由当场交货时货币的供求关系情况决定的。一般在外汇市场上挂牌的汇率，除特别标明远期汇率以外，一般指即期汇率。
我国的即期汇率是在央行当日公布的人民币汇率中间价基础上产生的。目前，我国银行间即期外汇市场人民币兑美元交易价浮动幅度为千分之五，即每日银行间即期外汇市场人民币兑美元的交易价可在中国外汇交易中心对外公布的当日人民币兑美元中间价上下千分之五的幅度内浮动，银行间外汇市场欧元、日元、港币、英镑等非美元货币对人民币交易价在中国外汇交易中心公布的非美元货币交易中间价上下3%的幅度内浮动；银行对客户美元对人民币挂牌汇价实行最大买卖价差幅度管理，当日美元现汇（钞）最高卖出价与现汇（钞）最低买入价区间应包含当日中间价，并且现汇最高卖出价与现汇最低买入价的价差不得超过当日中间价的百分之一，现钞最高卖出价与现钞最低买入价的价差不得超过当日中间价的百分之四，在上述规定的价差幅度范围内，银行可自行调整现汇和现钞的买卖价格，银行对客户非美元对人民币挂牌汇价没有浮动区间管理限制。外汇买卖的交割期限来划分，汇率可分为即期汇率与远期汇率。所谓交割，是指买卖双方履行交易契约，进行钱货两清的授受行为。外汇买卖的交割是指购买外汇者付出本国货币、出售外汇者付出外汇的行为。由于交割日期不同，汇率就有差异。
即期汇率又称现汇汇率，是买卖双方成交后，在两个营业日之内办理外汇交割时所用的汇率。与即期汇率相对的是远期汇率。远期汇率又称期汇汇率，是买卖双方事先约定的，据以在未来的一定日期进行外汇交割的汇率。外汇市场汇率和官方外汇牌价没有特别注明“远期”字样的，都是即期汇率。
与即期汇率和远期汇率相关的专业术语有：升水，贴水，套算汇率。当某货币在外汇市场上的远期汇价高于即期汇率时，称之为升水。如，即期外汇交易市场上美元兑马克的比价为1：1.75，三个月期的一美元兑马克价是1：1.7393。此时马克升水。当某货币在外汇市场上的远期汇价低于即期汇率时，称之为贴水。如，即期外汇交易市场上美元兑马克的比价为1：1.7393，三个月期的一美元兑马克价是1：1.75。此时马克贴水。套算汇率是指两种货币之间的价值关系，通常取决于各自兑换美元的汇率。如1英镑=2美元，且1.5德国马克=1美元，则3马克=1英镑，两种非美元之间的汇率，便称为套算汇率（即期汇率.via：http://baike.baidu.com/view/33916.htm）。
