定义

国防现代化（modernization of national defense, national defense modernization）是以现代最先进的科学技术武装国家的防御体系。中国的国防现代化包括武装力量、人民防空、国防科研、国防工业等的现代化。其核心是建设一支强大的现代化、正规化的革命军队。“国防现代化”是一个与世界各国相联系、相比较的相对概念。它与一定的社会历史条件相联系而存在，是对于特定的时间而言的历史发展过程，因而它也是一个发展的概念，具有鲜明的时代特征。由于各个国家的社会制度、战略思想、经济水平、科技发展、工业基础以及地理条件等方面存在差异，实现国防现代化的方针、原则、途径和目标、规模与重点也各不相同。同一个国家在不同的历史时期和不同的国际环境下，国防现代化的具体涵义也都有所不同。但提出实现国防现代化的国家，在总体上都是以当代世界发达国家的先进水平作为自己发展的参照系，结合本国国情使国家的国防建设在总体上达到当代世界的先进水平，以适应在现代及未来战争条件下保卫国家安全、巩固与发展国防的需要（《国防现代化》，via: http://baike.so.com/doc/6487362-6701069.html）。中国的国防现代化主要包括武装力量、人民防空、国防科研、国防工业等的现代化。国防现代化建设的主要内容有：第一，继承和发展毛泽东军事思想，制定和运用正确的战略方针和作战指导原则；第二，按照集中统一领导的原则，建立完善的国防领导体制和健全的工作制度与工作程序；第三，加强武装力量建设，确定科学合理的武装力量的结构和规模，提高武装力量的质量和水平，实现武装力量的革命化、现代化和正规化；第四，发展与整个国民经济相协调的国防经济，建立先进的和相应规模的国防科研与国防工业体系；第五，不断提高国防科学技术水平，实现武器装备的高度机械化、电子化、自动化、标准化、通用化、系列化；第六，建立现代化的军事指挥系统和国防工程设施（《国防现代化》，via: http://wenda.so.com/q/1365382621068808）。
