定义

限制或控制，指个人以理智约束情欲及言行的道德规范，也指社会或集体以风俗或法律对其成员进行强制性规约的制度精神。基于此，节制可分为自制与他制两类，即主动节制和被动节制。柏拉图认为，“节制是一种好秩序或对某些快乐与欲望的控制”（柏拉图，1986：150），这种节制“不单是个人对自己的情欲和行为的控制、节守而且还是指国家按照统治和被统治的隶属关心使秩序协调一致”（柏拉图，1986：163），在我国古代，孔子所说的“克己复礼”就是说克制自己不正当的、不合乎“仁”，这种节制乃是一种适度，一种适中、中道。正如亚里士多德所言：“只有在适当的时间和机会，对于适当的人和对象，持适当的态度去处理，才是中道，亦即最好的中道”（周辅成，1964：269-297）。节制不仅是基于个人利害而呈显为情欲与理智、眼前利益与长远利益之间冲撞与博弈的私德问题，而且更是涉及如何调制个体利益并使之服从整体利益的公德问题。节制如若施行得当，将起到修养个人身心、和谐人际关系与保障社会稳定的积极作用。关于节制的原则，其一为“利大”原则，即由理智权衡利弊，主体选取利大害小，舍弃利小害大的对象；其二为“整体性”原则，集体多数成员或其代表，通过对危害集体利益的个人行为进行限制或禁止以减少其对整体利益的破坏作用。由于任何社会成员都不可能随心所欲的放纵言行，因此，节制的必要性常为思想家们所论及。从孔子的“克己复礼为仁”、“从心所欲，不逾矩”到孟子的“养心莫善于寡欲”；从老子“见素抱朴，少私寡欲”到庄子“同乎无欲，是谓素朴，素朴而民性得矣”；从墨子“去其无用之费”至韩非“任理去欲，举事有道”等。荀子正是吸收了中国传统的节制思想精要，根据当时“世无王，穷贤良，暴人刍豢，仁人糟糠；礼乐息灭，圣人隐伏，墨术行”的社会时局，勾画出以“隆礼重法”为核心的理想蓝图。节制的对象可“情感、欲望、言行与智慧四种”（姜红，2012：37），节制情感体现在节“怒”、节“骄”、节“惧”、节“哀”、节“嫉”、节“忧”、节“怨”。节制欲望体现在好“声”之节、好“色”之节、好“食”之节、好“佚”之节等。“节制”最突出的作用就是维护最基本的交往得以进行，一个能够充分节制自我的人总是能够作出谦让的良好行为。
