定义

作为认识论范畴，必然王国指人在认识和实践活动中，对客观事物及其规律还没有真正认识因而不能自觉地支配自己和外部世界;而自由王国指人在认识和实践活动中，认识了客观事物的规律并自觉地依据这种认识来支配自己和外部世界。作为社会历史范畴，必然王国指人们受着盲目必然性支配，特别是受着自己所创造出来的社会关系的奴役和支配这样一种社会状态;自由王国指人们自己成了自然界和社会的主人，摆脱了自然界和社会领域的盲目力量的支配，能自觉地创造自己的历史的这样一种社会状态。马克思在《资本论》第3卷中说：在“必然王国的彼岸，作为目的本身的人类能力的发展，真正的自由，就开始了。但是，这个自由王国只有建立在必然王国的基础上，才能繁荣起来。”(《马克思恩格斯全集》第25卷第927页)恩格斯在《反杜林论》中进一步论述了必然王国和自由王国的关系，提出“人类从必然王国进入自由王国的飞跃”的命题。毛泽东也指出：“人类的历史，就是一个不断地从必然王国向自由王国发展的历史。这个历史永远不会完结。”(转引自《人民日报》1964年12月31日)社会主义社会的建立，标志着人类开始从必然王国向自由王国的飞跃。共产主义社会是人类理想的自由王国。必然王国向自由王国的飞跃，无论从认识论的意义上还是从社会历史状态来说，都是一个过程，都是人类长期实践斗争的结果。同时，必然王国向自由王国的飞跃，也是一个永无止境的发展过程。人所生存于其中的物质世界是永恒运动和发展的，在时间和空间上是无限的，因而人类认识和利用规律也是无限的。共产主义社会是人类社会发展的高级阶段，是人类的自由王国的社会，然而共产主义社会也是不断发展的，人类的自由度和人自身的发展和完善也一定会随着社会的前进而向更高的水平发展。（金炳华，2003：271-272）。
