定义

自然选择旧称“天择”。生物界适者生存、不适者淘汰的现象。由达尔文在《物种起源》一书中首先提出。他把“人工选择”原理应用于自然界，以自然选择原理说明自然界中生物物种的形成和进化、生物对环境的适应性和物种的多样性，认为自然界到处存在着生存斗争;自然界的生物种群内，普遍存在个体差异，普遍出现微小的不定变异;在一定的环境条件和生存斗争中，发生有利变异的个体被保存下来，并把有利的变异遗传到下一代，逐代积累起来，发生不利变异的个体则被淘汰。自然选择过程是一个长期的、缓慢的和连续的过程。自然选择学说的哲学意义在于：第一次科学地说明了生物进化的原因和动力，打击了唯心主义的神创论和目的论;同时以生物进化的事实揭示了偶然性与必然性的内在联系。遗传变异大量是偶然的、非定向的。在自然选择作用下，偶然的、非定向的有利变异随着环境的变化朝一定方向发展，纳入有规律的进化轨道，使生物进化的途径和方向具有一定的必然性。从生物个体的不定变异到新物种的形成过程，是偶然性向必然性转化的过程。（金炳华，2003：76）
