马克思在《1844年经济学哲学手稿》中通过对资本主义私有制条件下工人生产方式的描述，得出了异化劳动和异化的人形成的原因。通过分析这些成因，马克思引出了人的类本质的概念。人的类本质就在于人的自由自觉的活动，异化劳动奴役了人，限制了人的自由自觉的活动，从而扭曲了人的类本质，阻碍了人的发展（曹琳琳等，2015：56）。马克思关于人的类本质的理论内容主要包括三个方面：第一方面，马克思把人看作是类存在物。人的对象化的活动，既是一种实践的活动，又是一种社会的活动，对象化的人从根本上说是一种实践的人、社会的人，因而人也是一种实践的存在物和社会的存在物。第二方面，马克思把劳动、实践看作是人的类本质。马克思认为，“生产生活本来就是类生活。这是产生生命的生活。一个种的全部特性、种的类特性就在于生命活动的性质，而人的类特性恰恰就是自由自觉的活动”（马克思等，1979：96）。第三方面，人的类本质的特点。概括说来，马克思关于人的类本质理论，在哲学的最根本的问题、核心问题上突破了原有思维方式的束缚，实现了变革。
