定义

简单性和复杂性是“表征客观世界结构、组成状况特征的一对范畴。简单性指事物结构层次、组成因素的可分性、单一性，事物运动变化规律的绝对必然性等。复杂性指事物的多层次性、多因素性、多变性，事物组成要素之间及事物与环境之间的相互作用以及事物的整体行为和演化”（金炳华，2003：376）。简单性与复杂性总是相比较而存在的。一项新设计可能要比原有设计在某一方面要简单，但与后来的新设计相比，它可能又是复杂的了。正如哥白尼的日心说所用的本轮均轮系统比托勒密的天体系统要简单，但与后来开普勒以椭圆为运动轨道的天体系统来比就是复杂的了。与此同时，简单与复杂是客观事物的属性，任何事物都是简单与复杂的统一体。因而，简单性与复杂性并非泾渭分明，往往是互渗互补的，体现着科学研究的两种路向：从多样性走向统一性和简明性；从单一性走向多样性和多变性。因此，强调复杂性并不是对简单性的否定和抛弃，不是不要简单性，而是辩证的否定，是扬弃，是在保持简单性的前提下对复杂性的一种特别关注（赵东海，2010：20-21）。
