马克思在《1844年经济学哲学手稿》中提出的概念，指人在实践上和理论上能够把自身当做现有的、有生命的类来认识和把握，当做普遍的因而也是自由的存在物来对待。在马克思看来，有意识的生命活动把人同动物直接区别开来。动物的活动是一种无意识的本能活动，其生命活动虽然可以表现出目的性，但这是长期自然选择的结果，是对环境的适应，而不是作为主观形态存在于动物自身，正因为如此，动物不是有意识的类存在物，它无法认识自己的本质，无法把握同类的共性。而人的活动是有意识有目的的活动，人使自己的生命活动本身变成自己的意志和意识的对象，并能够认识自己的本质，把握同类的共性；人在改造自然界的同时，也在实现自己的目的，使在劳动过程开始时存在于观念中的东西，变成一种物质形态的结果。据此，马克思得出结论：“通过实践创造对象世界，即改造无机界，证明了人是有意识的类存在物。”（马克思，1979：96—97）
