定义

季节变动是由于周期气候变化和特殊节假日而发生的，多少具有一定规律性的、逐月或逐季的经济因素的波动（刘伟，1994：396）。季节变动主要是由于自然界气候的变化和社会风俗习惯而引起的（胡代光，1996：726）。如盐业生产在日光充足而又少雨的季节就较多，而雨季或冬季冰期的生产量则很少。又由于节假日的影响，使得电视机的销售量在不同月份就不一样，如大型节假日前的那个月的销售量较多，而其后的销售量较少，原因是大型节假日的电视节目精彩。为了消除季节变动对经济序列的影响，可以进行季节调整，季节调整是逐月或逐季进行补偿。可以有各种方法，例如环比法，月平均数法以及平均数和比法，季节调整数字可以是稳定的，即各个月份的季节指数每年都不变，也可以是变动的，即各个月份的季节指数每年稍有不同。季节指数用百分数表示，每个月数字均为年平均数之比。经济季节调整的数据的优点是，周期性的变动不会因纯季节性的变动而看不清楚。因此，在探讨经济周期时，季节调整是必要的（刘伟，1994：396）。
　统计学和计量经济学认为，由于季节变动在时间序列分析中被认为是在长期趋势及循环变动之外另外附加的一种变动，因而，季节变动的分析，常常就是考虑如何在时间序列中，分解出季节因素的影响。计算出季节差或季节比率（还可以在季节比率的基础上对各年的同一个月份的比率求平均数，算出季节指数）之后，就可以利用这些季差或差率消除季节变动的影响，进而估计时间序列中的长期趋势、循环变动和不规则变动。对于季或几个月的季节变动，也可以用类似的方法进行分析（刘伟，1994：1115）。
　测定季节变动的方法有两类：当季节变动现象不包含长期趋势变动时，可直接根据原始数据用同期平均法加以测定；当含长期趋势时，则应根据剔除长期趋势影响后的数据计算。常用的方法有环比中位数法和移动平均比率法。无论采用哪种方法，一般都需具备至少连续三年的各月发展水平资料（农业大词典编辑委员会，1998：759）。
　测量季节变动最常用的方法为移动平均比率法，其要点是：（1）计算以12个月为长的的（居中）移动平均数MA，以消除原时间序列中季节变动和不规则变动，MA为仅包括长期趋势和循环波动的资料，即：MA=T×C。（2）计算原时间序列Y与移动平均数MA的比率，把季节变动和不规则变动S×I分离出来。（3）对同月不同概念的S×I进行平均，以消除不规则变动I，把季节变动S分离出来，并对S进行调整，得出各月的季节指数（以100为基准的季节指数）（胡代光，1996：727) 。
