个性，也称人格，指一个人的整个精神面貌，即具有一定倾向性的心理特征的总和（朱智贤，1989：225）。人的个性有以下特点：具有一定的系统性与不同的层次性；具有异常的广阔性与丰富性；是稳定性与可变性的统一；是能动性与受动性的统一；是有意识活动与无意识活动的统一；是由其自然性和社会性所建构起来的独特的系统（周冠生，1987：25-27）。个性结构是由个性倾向性和个性心理特征两种成分组成。个性倾向性是个性结构中最活跃的因素，是一个人进行活动的基本动力，决定着人对现实的态度，决定着人对认识活动的对象的趋向和选择。个性倾向性主要包括需要、动机、兴趣、理想、信念和世界观（叶奕乾等，1993：27）。个性心理特征是指一个人身上经常地、稳定地表现出来的心理特点。它是个性结构中另一个重要组成部分，集中反映了人的心理面貌的独特性。个性心理特征主要包括能力、气质和性格（叶奕乾等，1993：27-28）。个性与社会密切相关。个性的发展受社会的制约，同时又反作用于社会。普列汉诺夫曾指出，“个人因其性格的某种特点而能影响到社会的命运。这种影响有时甚至是很大的，但这种影响发生的可能及其范围，却要依当时的社会组织以及当时的社会力量对比关系来决定。个人的性格只有在社会关系所容许的那个地方、时候和程度内，才能成为社会发展的‘因素’”（普列汉诺夫，1961：24-25）。辩证唯物主义认为，个性由三种水平的层次结构构成，即最低层次——生理方面的本能；中间层次——心理倾向的需要；最高层次——社会意识倾向的需要。辩证唯物主义的需要观揭示了社会需要与个人需要的一致性，并认为社会需要与个人需要之间的矛盾、联系与转化构成了人的个性形成的基本源泉（周冠生，1987：98）。
