定义

民族自决权，被压迫民族自己决定自己的命运，甚至自由分离，建立独立的民族国家的权利，是马克思主义解决民族问题的一项重要原则。由列宁于1896年7月在伦敦举行的社会主义工人党和工会国际代表大会上提出。列宁认为，“所谓民族自决,就是民族脱离异族集体的国家分离，就是成立独立的民族国家”（列宁，1972：509）。帝国主义时代是少数帝国主义大国不断加紧压迫各弱小民族的时代，因此解决民族问题应和殖民地附属国问题联系起来。他还认为，不承认民族自决权，就不可能为反对帝国主义的国际社会主义革命斗争（列宁，1972：528）。马克思坚持民族自决权，就是为了使压迫民族和被压迫民族中的无产阶级和劳动人民联合起来，打破帝国主义对殖民地、半殖民地和一切被压迫民族的压迫和统治，从争取一切被压迫民族的彻底解放。在打破这种压迫后，各民族可以在自愿原则上实行平等的联合。至于某一个民族是否分离的问题，要看各自的具体条件，要服从于无产阶级和人民群众的总体利益，服从于世界无产阶级革命斗争的需要，决不允许借口民族自决而搞分裂无产阶级、分裂社会主义祖国的狭隘民族主义。无产阶级及其政党支持被压迫民族和被压迫人民反对帝国主义、殖民主义、种族主义，正如民族自决的斗争；同时，要揭露帝国主义、殖民主义、种族主义者玩弄假自决的阴谋，以达到他们分裂被压迫民族、巩固其统治的目的（北京师范大学交叉学科研究会，1994：523）。
