定义

理论自信则是“指个体或者组织（团体）对自己提出的理论观点和理论体系所持的坚信不移的态度以及对理论发展充满信心的积极体验，是对理论的信任和认可”（佘双好，冯茜，2013：9）。2012年11月，胡锦涛总书记在十八大报告中提出：“中国特色社会主义道路，中国特色社会主义理论体系，中国特色社会主义制度，是党和人民九十多年奋斗、创造、积累的根本成就，必须倍加珍惜、始终坚持、不断发展；全党要坚定这样的道路自信、理论自信、制度自信”（坚持中国特色社会主义必须树立三个自信.via：http://news.163.com/12/1114/06/8G8H70PV00014AED.html）。理论自信是指对中国特色社会主义理论体系的自信。当代中国的指导理论就是中国特色社会主义理论体系。这是包括邓小平理论、“三个代表”重要思想、科学发展观在内的科学理论体系，是对马克思列宁主义、毛泽东思想的坚持和发展。理论是行动指南，只有坚持科学理论的指导才会有正确的实践。检验理论是否具有真理性的唯一标准是实践，我们不能教条式地理解经典理论并把它作为判断中国特色社会主义理论的依据，也不能把西方的理论作为标准来判断中国特色社会主义理论的尺度，必须用中国的实践作为判断理论的标准。当实践证明，中国特色社会主义理论体系是取得巨大成就的根本原因时，理论和实践就得到了统一，理论既是实践的指南，同时理论也在实践中得到验证（顾钰民，2013：31）。当前，坚持理论自信即坚定马克思主义的指导地位，坚信中国化科学社会主义理论的指导作用，坚持科学社会主义理论的发展创新。
