定义

政治哲学是一门用哲学的观点和方法去研究政治的本质及其发展规律和政治理论的概念体系的学科，是关于政治价值、政治的本质和一般政治问题的理论，也是其他政治理论的哲学基础。政治哲学研究的范围有：“关于国家、阶级或阶层、革命等具体政治现象的本质及其发展变化规律；在政治现象与其他社会现象的相互关系中揭示如何认识政治现象的基本理论和方法；关于人类政治活动的一般价值评价理论的相关分析，主要涉及到正义和自由、权利和义务等”（金炳华，2003：706）。政治哲学如果不以政治的规范和价值的观念为自己的中心关切，就会失去存在的基础。罗尔斯认为，政治哲学就是为一套适当的制度寻求一个共同的基础以保卫民主的自由权和平等，而这样一种基础首先是观念性的东西。诺齐克同意罗尔斯这一看法，认为，道德哲学为政治提供基础和界限，人们相互之间可以做什么、不可以做什么的约束，也限制着人们通过一种国家机器可以做的事情，或者为建立这样一种机器可以做的事情。但是，诺齐克对政治哲学采取一种狭义的理解，即它所关切的是国家是否必要以及何种国家才是必要的问题。他在《无政府、国家与乌托邦》一书的第一章《为什么要讨论自然状态》中说“政治哲学的基本问题，即一个先于有关国家应如何组织之问题的问题，是任何国家是否应当存在的问题。为什么不无政府呢？由于无政府主义的理论——如何可靠的话——不啻是对政治哲学的整个主题的釜底抽薪，故而在开始讨论政治哲学时，首先考虑它的主要对手无政府主义者是恰当的。那些认为无政府主义并非无吸引力的人们，将认为政治哲学也有可能在此终结。”（诺齐克，1991：13）马克思主义的政治哲学主要体现在《德意志意识形态》、《共产党宣言》、《家庭、私有制和国家的起源》等著作中。以凯尔森等为代表的规范主义政治哲学、以庞德等为代表的社会法学派的政治哲学、以伊斯顿为代表的政治系统论、以派伊为代表的政治文化论等，都是在当代较有影响的政治哲学理论（金炳华，2003：706）。
