唯心主义辩证法是同“唯物辩证法”和“形而上学”相对立的发展观，意指建立在唯心主义基础上的辩证法理论。古希腊唯心主义哲学家柏拉图是唯心辩证法的创立者之一。他系统地探讨了各个哲学范畴之间的对立统一关系，如存在和非存在、一和多、同和异、动和静等等，而将“马”、“桌子”等等具体事物的理念当作低层次的东西撇在一边。他认为纯粹哲学范畴有一个特点就是超出自身而向它的对立范畴转化的内在必然性（邓晓芒等，2005：54）。德国古典哲学的唯心主义辩证法，是辩证法发展的第二个历史形态，是马克思主义哲学的直接理论来源之一。康德是德国“哲学革命”的第一个代表，是德国古典唯心主义和辩证法哲学的奠基人。康德之后，经过费希特、谢林，到黑格尔，德国唯心主义辩证法发展到了顶点。黑格尔从客观唯心主义出发系统地阐述了观念的辩证法，把自然和社会看作绝对观念自身的发展过程的阶段。他以唯心主义方式阐释了质量互变、对立统一和否定之否定规律即一系列基本范畴，为马克思主义的唯物辩证法提供了理论来源（蔡德麟，1988：126）。黑格尔对整个德国古典唯心主义哲学的极大成就在于他所创立的唯心辩证法。马克思对于黑格尔的“对立统一”的思想给予很高的评价，指出：“有一个爱好虚构的思辨体系，但思想极其深刻的研究人类发展基本原则的学者一向认为，自然界的基本奥秘之一，就是他所说的对立统一规律” （马克思，恩格斯，1961：109）
