协作，是指相互配合、一起工作，也称劳动协作，是指许多人在同一生产过程中，或在不同的相互联系的生产过程中，有计划地一起协同劳动。协作可以分为简单协作和复杂协作。简单协作是指没有劳动分工的协作，它只是许多劳动者协力完成一种工作，例如几个人在一起传递砖和瓦等等。复杂协作是指在分工基础上的协作。复杂协作过程中，在总体方针策略指导下的，劳动者是分工合作，每个劳动者仅仅负责一种操作，是作为某一生产过程中的一部分工作，例如砌砖工和泥水工等的协作工作，完成房屋建筑施工过程中的砌筑任务。复杂协作以简单协作为基础，复杂劳动有利于劳动的专业化、工业的专门化，复杂的协作有利于技术改进，提高劳动的熟练程度，结果是有利于提高劳动生产率的。不同的社会，协作范围受到的限制不相同，发挥的作用也有差别。在私有制社会里，普通民众的相互协作遭到很大的限制，并成为剥削阶级榨取劳动者劳动成果的手段之一。而到了社会主义社会，它是“建立在生产资料公有制、发达的社会分工和有计划的商品经济的基础上的，体现了劳动者的互助合作的关系”（中国社会科学院经济研究所，2005），协作可以很好的发挥作用，可以有组织、有计划地进行，结果可以提高劳动生产率，推动社会化大生产。
