定义

社会运动，亦称“社会历史运动”,它是广大人民群众参与的、以生产实践为基础的变革社会的活动。社会运动是社会中的一部分人为了达到某一目的或解决某一问题而组织起来的、一种有组织、有明确目标、持续进行的群体行动，它包含运动的主体、客体、目标和手段等要素。社会运动是有始有终的，它受到其主体——人——的支配，是一种人为的行为方式，是可操作、可预设的（王美琴等，2004：155）。社会运动包括物质生产的实践、经济、政治、思想文化等领域。恩格斯说：“一切社会变迁和政治变革的终极原因，不应到人们的头脑中，到人们对永恒的真理和正义的日益增进的认识中去寻找，而应当到生产方式和交换方式的变更中去寻找；不应当到有关的时代的哲学中去寻找，而应当到有关的时代的经济学中去寻找”(马克思等，1995：741) 。马克思主义的历史唯物论观点认为社会运动的动力是生产关系和生产力之间的矛盾运动，是由低级不断向高级发展的过程，在社会发展进程中，表现为不同社会形态的更替，即从原始社会、到奴隶社会、封建社会、资本主义社会、社会主义社会(共产主义初级阶段),一直过渡到共产主义社会。每一次社会形态的变化，都带来了生产力和生产关系的变革，促进了经济、政治和思想文化等方面的发展。
