定义

社会哲学关于文化整体功能的理论。由波兰马林诺夫斯基和英国拉德克利夫-布朗提出。他们认为社会是一个有机体，其各部分通过文化联系为一整体。必须透过文化整体功能的考察，建立科学的社会人类学。一项风俗习惯与经济政治制度的功能是指它们在一个大文化体系中所担任的角色，以及它们与其他文化因素共同维持这个文化体系为一个整体时所具有的联系。文化产生的原因是需要，完成其功能就是满足需要，因而要了解一种文化，就要对它作功能的研究，了解其由功能所凝结成的整体。每一文化因素都有其功能的贡献，如果一个文化因素不能满足需要，它就不能存在。这种观点反对历史主义，认为历史不可能得到了解，了解的只是一个因素的现在的功能。历史上的东西现在之所以为人们保存和了解，也是它们现在是有功能的。恢复历史的原状没有效用，也不可能（金炳华，2001：449）。功能主义源起于18世纪的哲学思潮，原指在建筑和家具设计中主张“形式追随功能”的一种理论，经过19世纪的发展，在20世纪20年代在西欧确立了其作为现代主义最重要核心理论之一的历史地位（韩慧莉，2005：138）。
