创世主是“宗教观念之一,被看作创造天地万物和人类的神灵。至于创造的具体涵义,各种宗教不相同”(廖盖隆,1993:358)。例如,犹太教认为,创世主从“空虚混沌”之“地”和“水”上造出世界,又用“尘土”造人;古代巴比伦宗教和埃及宗教认为创世主用本来就有的物质材料造出世界和人;基督教认为世界是由创世主从绝对的“无”中造出来的;诺斯替教认为,创世主不是至高神,而是低于至高神的巨匠造物主;古代中国神话中的“盘古”只是把混凝在一起的天河地“开辟”出来,其身躯化成世界的各部分;佛教则根本不提及创世主和世界从何而来的问题。“一般认为,创世主的观念产生于原始社会的末期,盛行于阶级社会中的各宗教,是神学自然观的一个核心”(彭克宏,1988:246)。
