定义

艺术家在一定美学观念指导下对生活素材进行选择、提炼、集中、缀合、加工、改造，以创造富有普遍意义和美学价值的艺术作品的方法和过程。它是艺术典型化的一个重要方面。成功的艺术作品总是在高度个性化的基础上进行概括，通过个别反映一般，概括出生活的某些本质方面或人类的某些普遍情感。人物形象不仅是一个活生生的人，而且他的行为心理往往显示出他所属的阶级、阶层在特定历史条件下的某些共同的倾向，乃至共同的人性。概括化要求艺术家能深切感受时代脉搏，深刻理解生活中各种复杂的现实关系，挖掘出蕴藏在普通实际生活中的某些本质和规律，从而对素材进行去粗存精、去伪存真、由此及彼、由表及里的加工、提炼，把丰富深刻的意蕴寄寓在个别之中，塑造出具有普遍意义的艺术形象，达到以少总多，以形传神的境界。情节的组织、环境的渲染、叙事、抒情、写实、写意等都有概括化要求。概括化不同于概念化，它始终与艺术的个性化融合在一起（金炳华等，2001：404）。
