定义

相对主义，是指与“绝对主义”相对应的概念。相对主义主要是指人们在认识事物的时候片面夸大事物和认识的相对性，反而否认事物和认识的绝对性，最终否定事物客观存在和可知性的学说。相对主义的错误主要是割裂相对和绝对的辩证关系，片面地夸大事物的相对性，而否认事物的绝对性（金炳华，2003：264）。那么，否认了事物的绝对性，其结果就必然否认事物在一定界限内的质的区别，混淆了事物的界限，正如列宁指出的“切尔诺夫先生和马赫主义者同志们，你们的错误正在这里。因为，把相对主义作为认识论的基础，就必然使自己不是陷入绝对怀疑论、不可知论和诡辩，就是陷入主观主义”（列宁，1995：96—97）。这些机会主义者通常是利用相对主义搞诡辩，攻击马克思主义，为他们的反动行径而进行辩护。列宁还指出如何正确认识，对于“辩证法，正如黑格尔早已说明的那样，包含着相对主义、否定、怀疑论的因素，可是它并不归结为相对主义。马克思和恩格斯的唯物主义辩证法无疑地包含着相对主义，可是它并不归结为相对主义，这就是说，它不是在否定客观真理的意义上，而是在我们的知识向客观真理接近的界限受历史条件制约的意义上，承认我们一切知识的相对性”（列宁，1995：97）。那么，只有认识了绝对与相对的辩证关系，认识到真理的绝对性与相对性的关系，才能够正确分辨唯心主义，诡辩主义等错误的思想，坚持唯物辩证法。
