定义

个别劳动时间是“社会必要劳动时间”的对称，是指个别商品生产者生产某种使用价值实际耗费的劳动时间。在商品经济条件下，同种商品生产者由于生产条件、劳动熟练程度、劳动强度不同，生产同一种商品的各个生产者所耗费的劳动时间也不同。商品价值不是由个别劳动时间决定，而是由社会必要劳动时间决定。
商品生产者的个别劳动时间与社会必要劳动时间的比较，关系到商品生产的盈亏和商品生产者在市场竞争中的成败。生产商品的个别劳动时间如果高于社会必要劳动时间，商品生产者劳动就得不到全部补偿；反之，不仅能全部得到补偿，而且还获得额外价值。如果商品生产者使个别劳动时间降低到社会必要劳动时间之下，就可以在商品交换中获得较多的收益，在竞争中居于有利地位。反之，如果个别劳动时间高于社会必要劳动时间，就可能亏损，在竞争中居于不利地位（何盛明，1990: 33）。个别商品生产者要想在商品交换中取得有利地位，获得更多的收益，在竞争中保持优势，就要不断改善生产条件，改进生产技术，提高劳动生产率，缩短个别劳动时间。这在一定程度上促进了社会生产力的发展。从人类社会发展看，个别劳动时间的不断缩短是历史趋势。在资本主义制度下，一切生产都要服从资本家榨取更多剩余价值的根本目的，为此，资本家要尽量增加劳动强度，提高剥削程度，缩短个别劳动时间。在社会主义条件下，个别劳动时间的缩短，是通过采用先进技术和设备，减轻劳动强度，提高劳动者素质，提高劳动生产率等途经实现的（王益英，1997: 66）。
