定义

可能性与现实性是反映事物或现象出现之前的发展趋势与出现之后的既成现实之间的相互联系的一对哲学范畴。可能性是客观事物内部包含着的这种或那种发展的趋势。现实性是可能性的实现，是相互联系的变化发展着的各种客观实在的事物和现象的总和。可能性是潜在的、尚未展开的现实性，现实性是充分展开并已实现了的可能性。现实性之所以成为现实性就在于它有先行的可能性作依据，可能性之所以是可能性就在于它是有待实现的现实性，二者不可分割（可能性与现实性.via: http://baike.sogou.com/v102038927.htm?fromTitle=可能性与现实性）。可能性与现实性是对立统一的。可能性与现实性是对立的，可能性不等于现实性，可能的东西不一定都会成为现实；现实性也已不再是可能性，而是已经实现的可能性，二者的界限不能混淆。可能性与现实性又是统一的，二者相互依存，并在一定条件下互相转化。可能性存在于现实性之中，是潜在的还没有展开的现实性；现实性是可能性发展的结果，是充分展开并已实现了的可能性。可能性具有发展成现实性的内在根据，现实性的事物又包含着产生新的可能性的内在根据。因此，在一定条件下可能性转化为现实性，现实性又转化为新的可能性。这种不断相互转化，构成了事物的发展过程。唯物辩证法关于可能性和现实性辩证关系的原理，要求人们在实践中重视转化条件，正确发挥主观能动性，利用和创造有利条件，促成有利可能性，防止不利可能性转化为现实性，达到预期的目的(廖盖隆等，1993：273-274)。
