Life-Portraying Verse (Miao Zhen Zan)

定义

又作貌真赞、写真赞、彩真赞、邈生赞、图真赞、真仪赞、邈影赞。唐宋时敦煌悼念亡灵的流行形式。唐宋时敦煌社会中上层人士，多在晚年或病危时请人画像作赞，为后人留下生前容貌德业，供子孙瞻仰祭奠。

Also known as Mao Zhen Zan, Xie Zhen Zan and Cai Zhen Zan, it was a form of verse written to mourn for the deceased in Dunhuang during the Tang and Song Dynasties. During this historical period, in one’s later years or approaching decline, a middle or upper class person tended to ask someone to draw his portrait or to write a verse about him. In this way, the descendants could know what he looked like and understand his achievements, so as to pay tribute to their deceased relatives.
