定义

货币形式亦称“货币价值形式”。它是固定地由充当一般等价物的特殊商品来表现其他所有商品价值的价值形式，这是价值形式发展的第四阶段，也是最高阶段。与一般价值形式相比，它的进步在于原来作为一般等价物的特殊商品是不固定的，因时因地而异，每一交换区域都有几种不同的商品交替地充当一般等价物。由于商品经济的进一步发展，一般等价物最终固定在某种特殊商品上，并且最后固定在黄金身上。黄金能够排挤其他一般等价物，最终取得货币的特权地位是由它特殊的自然属性决定的：它质地均匀、坚固、不易磨损，便于分割和融合，少量的金具有很高的价值，便于携带等等。正是由于这些属性，使得它最适合于一般等价物的社会属性。所以，尽管各个国家在历史上都曾以各种各样的商品充当过货币，但随着商品交换和冶金技术的发展，最终都以黄金作为货币商品。这时，一般价值形式就转化为货币形式了。作为货币商品的黄金，它的使用价值两重化了。即金在没有成为货币之前，也是一种商品，具有特殊的使用价值，如可以用作镶牙、制作装饰品和其他工业用金等等。但金成为货币之后，除了原来所具有的这些特殊的使用价值外，又取得了一种由其特殊的社会职能产生的一般的使用价值，即作为表现商品价值的一般等价物，随时随地可以购买任何种类、任何数量的商品。货币形式本身是极其简单的，只要理解了商品价值形式的历史发展过程，货币诞生之谜就解决了（何盛明，1990: 420）。
货币的出现，并不意味着商品经济内在矛盾的解决，反而使这些矛盾进一步展开。商品内部使用价值和价值的对立，表现为商品和货币的外部对立。在资本主义社会，由于商品经济的高度发展，商品和货币的对立也越发尖锐起来。资本主义社会频繁发生的经济危机，就是这种对立的最明显的表现（廖盖隆，1993: 532）。
