Daman Hongren—the fifth patriarch of the Zen sect of Buddhism—passed his robe and begging bowl, which are symbols of the Dharma Seals of Enlightenment, to Huineng. Thus he became the sixth patriarch. He took the lead of the East Mountain Teaching school and established the Southern School of Chan Buddhism, arguing for the method of “sudden enlightenment” for discovering the true self. |
