美化指使潜在的美变成显现的美，使美显得更美，或使丑的变成看似美的一种改造和加工的方法、手段和过程。与“丑化”相对。它体现了人的创造美的需要和能力，是改造客观世界和改造自己的能动过程，是审美理想在创造行为上的实现。它有三种形态：（1）通过集中、概括、渲染、夸张，将本来美好的事物加以典型化，突显其中美好的因素，使之更美；（2）通过发隐抉微，艺术加工，将潜在的、可能的美开掘、展现出来，使之成为现实的、显现的美；（3）通过掩饰、变形，将本来不美甚至丑的事物加以粉饰或在美的理想指导下加以改造，以丑充美，或化丑为美（金炳华，2003：606）。美化是有目的的创造行为，包括自然界、社会物和艺术的美化，有内质的美化和外形的美化。合理的美化需遵循事物本身所具备的审美特性和发展规律，掌握一定的艺术手法，并以一定的审美观念、审美理想为指导，是按照美的规律改造自然、改造社会，使世界臻于完美的手段之一，是艺术创造，美的形象、意境创造的手法之一（朱立元，2010）。不合理的美化是掩盖事实真相，歪曲事物特性以达到特定目的的手段。
