Catur-yoni (the Four Forms of Birth)

This term refers to the four modes of birth, from which life can emerge: (1) jarāyuja, from a womb, as with mammals; (2) aṇḍaja, from an egg, as with birds; (3) saṃsvedaja, from heat or moisture, as with insects and fish; and (4) aupapāduka, from metamorphosis, as with moths from a cocoon, or as with gods, or demons, or the first beings in a newly created world.
