定义

莱伊尔（1797—1875)，又译赖尔，英国地质学家，地质学的奠基人。莱伊尔1797年9月14日生于苏格兰的金诺第镇，1814年起在牛津大学学法律，期间他经常去听巴克兰(W. Buekland，1784—1856)的地质学讲座，并且成为激变论的信奉者。后来，莱伊尔从欧州各地野外地质观察发现，激变论得不到事实的支持。1827年春，他读了拉马克的《动物哲学》，加深了对激变论的怀疑。莱伊尔继承和发展了郝屯的均变论和渐变论思想，他正确地指出，如果不整合和地震是表征地球的激变的话，那么，它不能在全球每个地区同时发生，而是逐渐迁移它的位置 ,总是此起彼伏的。同时，他根据现代沉积率推断，仅仅从志留纪算起，地层沉积时间不少于二亿四千万年（孟迟，1984：33）。1828年起，他花费五年的时间写成并出版了名著《地质学原理》(1830，1832，1833)三卷。在他逝世前，《地质学原理》共出十二版，成为近代地质学的经典。莱伊尔1853年获牛津大学名誉博士学位，1874年获剑桥大学名誉博士学位，1862年被选为法国科学院通讯院士。莱伊尔的主要著作有《地质学原理》（1838）、《普通地质学教科书》(1851)和《古人类的制作》(1863)等。
