定义

社会变迁是指一切社会现象发生变化的动态过程及其产生的结果。从本质上讲这一过程就是社会分化与整合的过程。社会现象主要是指社会制度、社会关系、社会组织、环境、人口、经济、政治、法律、教育、宗教、文学艺术、生产方式、价值态度、风俗时尚等方面的变化。社会变迁往往在社会结构上形成可以观察到的变化，它既包括社会的进步与退步，又包括社会的整合与解体。社会变迁的内容主要涉及自然环境变迁、人口变迁、社会制度和结构变迁、社会价值观变迁、文化变迁、生活方式变迁、科技变迁等方面。社会变迁的过程是辩证的，既有渐进过程，如社会进化，也有突变过程，如社会革命。既可能是前进的，如社会进步，也可能是倒退的，如社会退步。既有局部变迁，如乡村变迁，也可能是整体变迁，如社会文化变迁。但是由于人类社会是一个不断向前发展历史，因此社会变迁从整体上、大方向上看总是前进的。影响社会变迁的因素有很多，其中生产力与生产关系的矛盾运动是最根本的原因。生产方式的变动引起社会结构的变动，又导致各种社会现象的全面变动。社会变迁的发生除了受生产力发展的影响之外，还受到自然环境、社会心理、文化传播等多方面因素的影响，是多种因素相互作用的结果。学界较有代表性的学者郑杭生认为“影响社会变迁的因素包括环境、人口、社会制度、社会价值观念与生活方式、科学技术、经济发展等六个方面”（金炳华，2001：1242-1243）。社会学家们提出的关于社会变迁的理论主要有：斯宾格勒和美国社会学家索罗金的历史循环论、德国达伦多夫等人的社会冲突论。尽管他们对社会变迁的各个方面都做了研究，但具有一定的片面性，在社会变迁动力与方向的研究上有时又陷入了唯心主义。总体上讲，历史唯物主义是研究社会变迁理论的科学方法，因此在对社会变迁的研究中学者们更多的是采用复合视角探索这个概念。
