交往行为理论是以“交往行为”概念为核心建构的社会批判理论。它是由德国哲学家、社会学家哈贝马斯提出。交往行为理论的核心范畴是“交往行为”。哈贝马斯根据不同的行为方式把行为划分为四种类型，目的论行为，规范性行为，戏剧性行为和交往行为。其中，所谓目的论行为指的是行为者选择一定的手段，以一种相对恰当的方式来实施这种手段，以达到一定目的的行为，这种行为是从目的合理性的方向得出的。规范性行为指的是规范调节的行为，规范性行为所针对的是在一定社会环境下的群体而不是个人，这个群体对于规范或者规则都采取认可的态度，大家共同遵守这个群体的规范和准则。戏剧性行为指的是单个的主体想要在群体面前表现自己，也是一种自我展现的行为，也可以说是表演，这种行为涉及到主观世界。交往行为指的是两个或者两个以上的具有行为能力和语言能力的交往主体，主体之间在相互理解的情况下进行交往，使他们的计划或者本身的行为能够达到一种共识（陈媛媛，2011：18）。而在交往行为中已经蕴涵着“交往合理性”的基本结构和要素。“交往合理性”则是交往行为理论的中心内容。哈贝马斯的交往行为理论对理性的理解已突破了传统哲学对理性的界定，包含着对传统理性概念的批判和扬弃，把理性放在人际间广泛的和相互交往的生动的关系背景下去考察。他还把这种交往行为理论看作是一种现代社会改造的理论（程志民，江怡，2004：104）。
