定义

国教全称为国家宗教，指的是由国家确立的在本国具有高于其它宗教地位的宗教，是被执政当局定为国家意识形态并得到该国法律或宪法确认的宗教。国家宗教也有自己的教主、教皇、教士和教徒。国教的教主不一定是国家宗教的真正创立者，但一定是国教精神的主张者或国教精神依托的对象。教皇是宗教组织内的最高统治者，既是最高主祭人，也是教义的裁定者，国教的教皇就是国家的最高元首。国教往往负担着通过宗教宣扬国家思想的任务，在国家的思想意识领域占有支配或主导地位，得到国家的支持和保护，并为维护国家政权的稳定和社会生活的秩序服务（via: http://book.duxiu.com/EncyDetail.jsp?dxid=900015112101&d=8B654FA7784AB329A1E83AFB3AD87662）。在上古和中古时代，国教是十分普遍的现象，对国家的政治和社会生活有巨大影响，并排斥其他宗教或意识形态。国教一般得到国家的财政支持，不纳税，费用由国家支付。资产阶级革命后，随着政教分离原则的逐步实行，宗教宽容和信仰自由逐渐成为现代政治和思想原则，意识形态多元化逐步得到承认。现代社会中的国教发挥影响的方式已日益温和，作用也大大减弱，对其他宗教和意识形态已不再完全排斥（via: http://book.duxiu.com/EncyDetail.jsp?dxid=900007546826&d=DEF5614B1BE83B8BF083E5363A8DA0F6）。全世界以宪法或其他法律规定基督教为国教的国家有英国、挪威、丹麦、芬兰等；规定伊斯兰教为国教的国家有伊朗、叙利亚、沙特阿拉伯等多数中东阿拉伯国家及亚洲的印尼；规定佛教为国教的国家有泰国、柬埔寨等。政教合一，强制人民信奉国教（伊斯兰教）的有伊朗。
