亚洲金融危机又称“亚洲金融风暴”，是指于1997年7月2日在泰国发生的泰铢对美元的汇率下跌20%以上的事件。接着这场风暴横扫马来西亚、新加坡、日本、韩国、中国和港澳台等地区，打破了此前亚洲经济飞速发展的良好局面。部分亚洲经济大国的经济开始萧条，国家政局也因此出现混乱。亚洲金融危机起源于1997年泰国中央银行放弃固定汇率制度，转而实行浮动汇率制度。金融危机的第一阶段中各国汇率制度受到冲击，1997年下半年波及日本后，金融危机由东南亚金融危机正式演变为亚洲金融危机。“私人资本纷纷推出亚洲市场，国际投资者惊慌失措的反应以及大量资金撤离东亚和东南亚各国致使这场危机迅速扩散。由于资金的撤离,各国政府不得不继续贬值本国的货币,这又导致更多的投资者撤回投资”。（刘刚，2007：55）第二阶段主要表现为亚洲金融危机的深化，虽然国际货币基金组织对东南亚国家提供了金融支援从而抑制东南亚国家经济的进一步衰退，但是日元的持续贬值导致亚洲地区的整体经济形式更加严峻。第三阶段的金融危机蔓延到中国香港，并一路向北冲击俄罗斯的股票和汇率市场，危机影响范围不断扩大，直到1999年金融危机结束。亚洲金融危机使世界投资者损失惨重，据统计，世界投资者仅在1997年的直接经济损失就高达7000亿美，其中亚洲损失5160亿美元。
