詹姆逊是美国文论家、美学家。新马克思主义者，美国杜克大学教授，致力于“以马克思主义阐释、批评理论，对一些文本进行分析，思考文化和历史的辩证关系。”（金炳华，2003：1070）詹姆逊在早年曾是萨特的拥护者，后在70年代致力于马克思主义的结构主义批判，晚年热衷于文化批评。詹姆逊的思想受卢卡奇、阿尔都塞、本雅明、阿多尔诺等人的影响，但詹姆逊能对他们进行反思使自身成为本世纪后期新一代马克思主义学者与理论家。詹姆逊的代表作是《政治无意识》，在该书中詹姆逊提出了“马克思主义阐释学”及“政治无意识”概述。詹姆逊于1985年曾在北京大学讲授《后现代主义文化理论》，提出用“新马克思主义”取代“西方马克思主义”，对中国的后现代主义文化批评产生了较大的影响。詹姆逊曾在《马克思主义与形式》一书中就已经提出马克思主义应该随着时代而被赋予不同的特点。詹姆逊曾批评在“后现代”语境下重新激活一度被视为“陈腐教义”之古典传统的马克思主义。詹姆逊与本世纪“西方马克思主义”在重大哲学理论问题上有所不同，主要体现在向经典马克思主义的回返。詹姆逊认为，马克思在《〈政治经济学批判〉序言》中关于上层建筑与经济基础关系的有关论述再加上剩余价值理论便是马克思主义的全部综合。他对文化的批评阐释既是立足于经济决定论的，但又强调意识形态各层面在功能上的半自律性，并将之归结为阶级的意识，而文明的历史是阶级与阶级斗争的历史，因此，一切阐释最终都是政治的。詹姆逊认为，其本人的批评是一种辩证法批评，因为没有对矛盾的认识也就是没有辩证法的思想，而没有辩证法思想也就没有马克思主义。
