从哲学角度来看，理解力就是人在认识活动中使主观与客观、思想与实际相符合的能力。理解属于人的主观认识活动。在人的心智活动中，有感性、知性和理性三个层次，而理性是其中的最高层次。理解既是人的认识的一个过程，也是人的认识的一种能力。作为人的认识的过程，它有一个透过事物的现象，由浅入深、由一级本质到多级本质的深化过程。人的理解是一个不断发展、不断深化的过程，不可能达到绝对的顶点。人的每一阶段的对事物、现象的理解，都处在一个相对的深度和层次上。由于理解力是主体的一种认识能力，因此，理解力的水平必然地与主体的知识水平、思想理念、经历经验、价值观念、立场观点、思维模式相联系。提高主体的理解力水平，一是要注意改善已有的认知图式、模式，丰富知识经验，端正立场观点，改进思维方法；二是要具体问题具体分析，一切以时间、地点、条件为转移，解放思想，实事求是，与时俱进，灵活地、创造性地把思想与实际、主观与客观结合起来；三是要坚持实践第一的观点，不断地在实践中探索真理、证实真理和发展真理（张友谊，2012：70-71）。
